The Internet is a mammoth data network. The end user asks for data by clicking a link, and the data is then delivered and displayed. Files that contain text and images are small enough to travel quickly across the limited bandwidth of the Internet. Content providers who want to send audio or video face a different problem: file size. Uncompressed, broadcast-quality video requires 160 megabits per second (Mbps) of network bandwidth. Uncompressed, CD-quality audio requires approximately 2.8 Mbps. Most Internet users connect at speeds of only 56 kilobits per second (Kbps), a speed that is at least 500 times slower than audio and video require. This is where codecs come into the picture. Codec stands for compressor/decompressor, and it is an algorithm that allows data to be compressed on one computer and then decompressed on another computer. The benefit of this is that once the file is compressed, it takes up less space on a hard drive or while being delivered over a network.
Content creators use codecs to compress or encode audio and video for real-time or local playback over the Internet and corporate intranets. Because compression algorithms are constantly being created and improved, it is common to not have the necessary codec to play a certain file. Typically, all that is required is to download the codec, although in some situations you may be required to pay a fee. These codec packs all contain a large amount of codecs, it is very likely that any of these packs will be severe "overkill" for most home users. Choose with discretion! Please keep in mind that some codec packs can cause problems and conflicts between different applications/codecs.

The K-Lite Codec Pack is a free collection of codecs and related tools. Codec is short for Compressor-decompressor. Codecs are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video. The very user-friendly installation is fully customizable, which means that you can install only those components that you want.
There are three versions of the K-Lite Codec Pack: The Basic version, who fits on a single floppy disk, contains only the most essential codecs and related tools. The Standard version contains everything what is needed to play all the commonly used formats. The Full version contains even more codecs and also has encoding support.
The text in black applies to the Full, Standard and Basic versions, the text in green applies to the Full and Standard versions and the text in red applies to the Full version only.
It is highly recommended to uninstall all existing codec related software before installing. This way your system stays clean and potential problems will be avoided.
